1 June - 13 July Germaine Kruip, rehearsal
Opening: Saturday 31. May 2003, 15.00 hrs.
Introduction: Suzanne van de Ven, Amsterdam / Kassel
PORTAL introduces itself to the Fridericianum as a continuation of the by now traditional 'Rundgang'-element of its exhibition-programme. A continuation, but also an expansion of its implicit characteristics: whereas Rundgang was originally conceived of to introduce young artists within the museal context, thereby providing the visitor with a view of developments outside of the museum, the first two PORTAL-exhibitions wish to simultaneously offer a reverse perspective. Specifically inviting its contributors to take the temporal-spatial conditions of the museum, physical or conceptual, as the starting point for their work, PORTAL functions as a platform that also incorporates their view on the 'inside'.
First artist to be offered this platform is Germaine Kruip (NL, 1970), who exhibited earlier in different international artspaces such as Index in Stockholm, Sweden, the Centro Cultural in Tucuman, Argentine and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Working from a conceptual and performative heritage, Kruip employs the existing architecture or public space as the actual stage for her work, through highlighting its characteristic traits or workings. Sound-, light-, monumental or gestural interventions serve to double, complement or deny the surrounding space, thereby pointing it out. Seldomly making use of actors or extras, if only to complement an existing situation, and never performing herself, Kruip through her work offers a time- and space frame! , wherein visitors simultaneously become spectators and performers within their surroundings, constituting a performance as such. For PORTAL I, Germaine Kruip will further elaborate her concept of REHEARSAL. Within the context of her work 'rehearsal' not only reappears in its meaning of 'repetition' in a literal or spatial sense, but also in a figurative or temporal sense, as a universal reference bearing within it the double meaning of both 'before' and 'after'. Pointing backward and forward in time, REHEARSAL, as the title of her work in the Fridericianum simultaneously refers to her exhibition that took place in Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam in November of last year.
An experimental exhibition format per se, PORTAL I and II can be understood as two autonomous exhibitions, together though forming a whole. Close collaboration between PORTAL's artists, graphic designers and curators marked by a recognizable approach of the museum's spaces -in any conceivable meaning of the word- aims at providing a solid platform within the Fridericianum that allows for a changeable outcome of both exhibitions. Within this first series, PORTAL I will in turn serve as a platform for works from various international artists in PORTAL II.
